About me

I’m Fiona Campbell-Howes, and I'm currently a PhD student at the University of Glasgow, researching the early medieval (c.500-1000 AD) history of the Moray Firthlands in north-east Scotland.

As there are very few documentary records for the region in the early Middle Ages, my research focuses on alternative sources of evidence, including sculpture, archaeology, place-names, landscape, material culture and inscriptions.

I use this blog to puzzle through research questions and try out new ideas about the evidence I’m looking at.

I write one essay-length blog a month on average, but sometimes they may be bunched together and sometimes I may not write for a while (because I’m researching).

I like to make my work available to everyone for free, rather than publishing in academic journals where it’s squirrelled away from the public behind paywalls.

As a subscriber, you’ll be the first to read about my research and my latest thinking. I really value feedback from the community so please do feel free to comment!
